What does resistance mean in vape coils, what are ohms and why does it matter?

Resistance is the force that counteracts the flow of current in electrical circuits. But what does resistance mean in vape coils?

In vaping, resistance refers to the measure of how easily electricity can flow through a material. In the case of vape coils, resistance is measured in ohms (Ω) and it determines how much power is required to heat the coil to the desired temperature.

A coil with a lower resistance requires more power to heat up, which means it will produce more vapour, but it will also consume more battery power and generate more heat. On the other hand, a coil with a higher resistance requires less power to heat up, which means it will produce less vapour, but it will also consume less battery power and generate less heat.

What does resistance mean in vape coils regarding vapour production?  The resistance of the coil also affects the experience of vaping in terms of the temperature and the amount of vapour produced. Coils with a lower resistance heat up more quickly and get hotter, which can result in a warmer vape and more vapour. Coils with a higher resistance heat up more slowly and get cooler, which can result in a cooler vape and less vapour.

 

What does resistance mean in vape coils: the different types of coil resistance

There are several kinds of resistance for vape coils, which can affect the vapor production, flavor, and temperature of the vapor. The most common types in the UK include:

Standard resistance vape coils:

Standard resistance coils typically have a resistance over 1.0 ohms. They are designed to be used with standard vaping devices and e-liquids. They are widely available and easy to find, and they produce moderate vapour and have a moderate heating rate.

Sub-ohm vape coils:

Sub-ohm coils have a resistance of less than 1.0 ohms. They are designed to be used with devices that can handle sub-ohm resistance. They produce more vapour and heat up faster than standard resistance coils, but they also require more power to operate.

Temperature control vape coils:

Temperature control (TC) coils are designed to be used with devices that have temperature control features. They have a resistance of around 0.1 ohms and can withstand high temperatures without burning out. TC coils are compatible with nickel, titanium, or stainless steel wire. This type of coil allows the user to set and control the temperature of the vapour, it brings more consistency and safety while vaping.

Clapton vape coils:

Clapton coils are designed to have more surface area than a traditional coil of the same gauge, this will enhance flavour, by having more material to heat up and create vapour. They are made with a thicker gauge wire that is wrapped with a thinner gauge wire.

Fused Clapton vape coils:

Fused Clapton coils are similar to Clapton coils but made with two or more strands of wire. They also have more surface area than a traditional coil of the same gauge, this also enhances flavor and vapour production.
